FAX MACHINE (FACSIMILE) OR COMPUTER FAX MODEM

  • The fax machines are really just special-purpose computers, which conduct a conversation over the analogue telephone system.

  • The number of bits of information needed to represent a faxed page varies according to the pattern of black on white on the page. However, on average around 200 kbits are sufficient for one page.

INTERNET

  • With wired connections, a computer or device physically attaches via a cable or wire to a communications device, such as modem, that transmits data and other items over transmission media to the internet.

  • The Internet has become the best-known specialized mechanism for providing links between computers located in all continents of the world.

EMAIL

  • Email (short for electronic mail) is the transmission of messages and files via a computer network.

  • We use an email program to create, send, receive, forward, store, print, and delete email messages. An email message can be simple text or can include an attachment such as a document, a graphic , an audio clip or a video clip.

CHAT ROOMS

  • A chat is a real-time typed conversation that takes place on a computer or devices with many other online users.

  • Anyone in the chat room can participate in the conversation, which specific to a particular topic.

VOIP

  • VoIP, short for Voice over IP (Internet Protocol), enables users to speak to other users via Internet connection.

  • To place an internet phone call, we need a broadband internet connection, a microphone, and speaker such as Skype. VoIP uses the internet instead of public switched telephone network to connect a calling party.

FTP

  • It permits file uploading and downloading to and from other computers on internet. Uploading is the process of transferring files from computer or device to a server on the internet to your computer or device.

VIDEO / AUDIO CONFERENCING

  • Connection between two or more parties on computers communicate over a two-way transmission using video and audio signals via the Internet.

  • Videoconferencing utilizes computer software and hardware (usually a microphone and webcam), or some other device capable of transmitting both signals, such as a videophone.

  • Use in educational instruction as long as the teachers must have microphone, can have camera. Ideally end users have microphone (camera not essential) for synchronous communication. Transmitted to & received from any computer in any location that has Internet connection (broadband desirable for effective use).
